How the Meta algorithm changed, and why old playbooks now lose money

Aleksandar DrinicMeta strategyCurve.no
Quick answer: Meta shifted from rewarding precise audience targeting to rewarding creative volume and broad delivery. The old playbook of narrow interest audiences, tight budgets and constant manual tweaking now starves the algorithm of the signal it needs. Today the winning inputs are broad targeting, high creative volume, and letting the system optimise while you feed it fresh angles.

If you learned Meta ads before 2022 and have not rebuilt your approach, you are almost certainly leaving money on the table, or losing it. The platform changed underneath the playbook, and a lot of agencies are still selling the old one.

What used to work

The 2018 to 2020 playbook was about targeting. You found narrow interest audiences, layered them, excluded aggressively, ran many small ad sets with tight budgets, and manually adjusted bids and budgets daily. Creative mattered, but targeting precision was the lever. It worked because the algorithm needed help finding the right people.

What changed

Two things. First, Apple's privacy changes cut the signal Meta received from outside its own platform, so granular targeting and tracking got less reliable. Second, and more importantly, Meta's own machine learning got dramatically better at finding buyers on its own, given enough budget and enough creative to learn from. The result: the algorithm no longer needs you to hand-pick tiny audiences. It needs you to give it room and raw material.

Why the old playbook now backfires

What works now

The modern playbook inverts the old one. Go broad on targeting and let the algorithm find buyers. Consolidate budget so ad sets actually exit learning. Stop micro-managing and change inputs deliberately, not constantly. And above all, feed the system creative volume: we test 100+ ads a month on scaling accounts, because creative is now the main lever the algorithm has to work with. The full mechanics are in our Meta ads guide.

The uncomfortable part

You cannot micro-manage your way out of weak results anymore. If the creative is not strong and the volume is not there, no amount of bid tweaking saves the account. That is a harder job than adjusting audiences, which is exactly why the brands that adapt pull away from the ones still running 2020 tactics.

Frequently asked questions

Is detailed targeting dead?
Not entirely, but it is no longer the main lever. Broad targeting with strong creative now beats narrow interest stacking in most accounts we audit.
How many ads do I really need?
At meaningful spend, roughly 75 to 100+ unique ads per month. Below that the algorithm runs out of signal. The full math is in our creative volume post.
Should I still use cost caps and manual bidding?
Sometimes, but they are fragile and Meta has struggled to honour tight caps. Fundamentally good creative and correct structure matter far more than bid tactics now.
